Union leaders highlight that these unreported workplace accidents cause roughly 1.2 million people to suffer from work-related illnesses. At the extreme, serious accidents can and do cause deaths- roughly 20,000 workers each year.

 

The TUC is requesting better measures towards the prevention of deaths caused by road accidents, fume exposure and occupational cancers.

 

Whilst the new government are presently reassessing “saturated” health and safety laws, the TUC report argues that legislation should not be cut down, "Regulation works, as long as it is enforced, and it saves lives and prevents the contraction of unnecessary illnesses. That is why the UK continues to need strong regulation and enforcement."
