Accidents can happen due to numerous reasons. Identifying these particular reasons is the starting point towards working to prevent accidents.
Apparently, carrying out unsafe acts causes four times as many injuries and accidents as having unsafe conditions do. Therefore we’ve listed numerous behaviours that commonly cause workplace accidents:
- Overconfidence: Having confidence when carrying out tasks is importance, but too much of it is dangerous. The “it can never happen to me” attitude can lead to using incorrect methods to carry out tasks. Procedures are there for a reason, so stick to it!
- Safety procedures are ignored: This can endanger the safety of all workers. Safety rules and procedures are put in place to protect everyone, so it is not something to treat lightly.
- Using shortcuts: When repeating tasks, you may be tempted to use shortcuts to increase efficiency. However, this sharply increases the chances of a workplace injury occurring. Ask yourself: is the little time saved really worth the safety risk involved?
- Incomplete instructions before beginning a task: Training for all new employees must be provided. If your workplace doesn’t provide sufficient guidance on how to carry out a task, ask them for it, as they are legally bound to do so- so don’t be intimidated! Whatever you do, don’t just make it up or assume.
- A poorly maintained work area: This presents a variety of hazards, and an accident is bound to happen. Maintaining a tidy workplace also shows employee pride, as well as the obvious safety benefit.
- Lack of attention: To carry out a task safely and carefully requires workers to concentrate and to not become distracted (i.e. thoughts or other workers). Once attention has been diverted away from the task, it becomes a safety hazard. Workers must focus, especially during the most dangerous tasks.
- Lack of pre-planning: To carry out a task effectively and safely, it’s advisable to think through the task process. This’ll help you to think of any potential problems you may encounter, and allow you to realise if you have all the appropriate tools and equipment required.
