First Aid Kits: 3 vital questions

Back to articles

Here are 3 important questions to ask about your First Aid Kit:

1. Do you have a first aid kit in your workplace?

According to the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, any site or workplace needs a suitably stocked first aid kit.

2. Does your first aid kit contain items appropriate to the assessed workplace standards?

Because of the differences in the nature of each workplace, there is no mandatory list of items to put in a first aid box. However, the Health and Safety Executive recommends the following items in an office as a guideline:

-A First Aid leaflet

-Individually wrapped plasters (assorted sizes) x 20

-Eye pads x 2

-Triangular bandages x 4

-Disposable gloves x 2 pairs

-Safety pins x 6

-Medium dressings x 6

-Large dressings x 2

3.  Did you know that the contents of your first aid kit can go out of date?

Although there is o specific review timetable, many items (particularly sterile ones) are marked with expiry dates. In general, all items with a CE mark will have an expiry date and it is recommended that the contents of a first aid box is checked regularly to ensure it is fit for purpose, even if it hasn’t expired.
